Treatment for white grubs in late summer is problematic. It is not an automatic decision to choose to use an insecticide for white grubs. By September white grubs are fully-grown and thus harder to kill. Insecticide treatments after early October are not effective and are not recommended.
When should I put grub killer on my lawn?
The key to controlling grubs is to kill them before they hatch and begin to cause damage to your lawn. In spring or early summer, apply a preventative grub control product, such as Scotts® GrubEx®1 to your lawn, following label directions. This is especially important if youve had problems with grubs in the past.
Is it too late for grub control?
Preventative grub control is usually done between June 1 and July 15 with one or two applications of an insecticide containing imidicloprid. If you missed this application, you may start seeing damage from grub larvae. Unfortunately, its too late to get control with imidicloprid products.
Can I treat for grubs now?
This time of year (late summer and fall), only curative products can be used to effectively control grub populations. Ingredients such as carbaryl, trichlorfon or zeta-cypermethrin are curative and work on contact with grubs. Examples of products that contain these chemicals include Sevin® and Dylox®.
Can you apply too much GrubEx?
Applying too much can hurt the environment and using too little may not control the grubs in your lawn. Although Dylox claims it kills grubs within one to three days if applied properly, you may still notice grub activity within that time or shortly after.
Should I fertilize or GrubEx first?
After applying GrubEx to your lawn, you do not have to wait to apply a straight fertilizer. However, you must wait at least one week to apply a combination weed-and-feed control product after applying GrubEx, and two weeks is preferred.
Does GrubEx need to be watered in?
Treating with GrubEx After application, water your lawn to a depth of 1/2 inch, which is typically a 20- to 30-minute watering. GrubEx is not activated until its watered in, and as soon as the lawn dries, it is safe for your family and pets.
Can I put down GrubEx and fertilizer at the same time?
According to the Scotts website, only straight fertilizer, with no other ingredients such as pre-emergent herbicides or other pesticides, may be applied at the same time as GrubEx. The site gives no recommendation for mixing straight fertilizer and GrubEx, so it may be wisest to apply one product at a time.
How long does it take for GrubEx to work?
When does GrubEx work? GrubEx begins working 60 to 90 days after being applied to the soil. Unlike Merit, which works almost immediately, its important to distribute GrubEx from mid-April to early June.
