Question: Are there different dialects of Japanese?

The dialects of the Japanese language fall into two primary clades, Eastern (including Tokyo) and Western (including Kyoto), with the dialects of Kyushu and Hachijō Island often distinguished as additional branches, the latter perhaps the most divergent of all.

How many dialects does Japanese have?

You could say that Japan has as many dialects as it has prefectures, and that wouldnt be too far off. The country, roughly the size of California, is home to 47 different (though sometimes small) varieties of the Japanese language.
