But Ghost Island, as its been nicknamed by locals, has become something of a cult tourist attraction in recent years. For over 80 years Hashima was home to coal miners and their families. At its peak in 1959, more than 5,000 people lived on just 6.3 hectares of land. Hashima was only opened to tourists in 2009.
