Following 27-year-old Taeko Okajima as she takes a holiday to the rural part of Yamagata Prefecture, away from her office job in Tokyo, the film is essentially a story of memory. Taeko recalls her time in fifth grade, attempting to solve a crisis of identity experienced during a formative period of her life.

Why do Japanese people take off their shoes indoors?

Japanese have developed the custom of eating meals sitting on tatami mats, not on chairs. They also roll out the futon on which they sleep on the tatami floor. Therefore, they take their shoes off when entering the house to avoid getting the floor dirty.
