Question: How did the Crystal Palace burn down?

The Crystal Palace was constructed of iron and glass – so how and why did it burn down? When fire struck the Crystal Palace on 30 November 1936, years of wear and tear, and lack of finance to repair it, had left it in poor condition. The cause of the fire is still unknown and there was never an official inquiry.

What caused the fire at the Crystal Palace?

The Lord Mayor of London set up a fund to repay him, and in 1913 the Palace became the property of the nation. The cause of the fire was never discovered, but theories have included old and faulty wiring to a carelessly-discarded cigarette falling between floorboards.
