Fencing traces its roots to the development of swordsmanship for duels and self defense. Fencing is believed to have originated in Spain; some of the most significant books on fencing were written by Spanish fencers.
When was fencing first played?
1896 Fencing was included for the first time at the 1896 Games in Athens, and has remained on the Olympic programme since then. The womens fencing competition entered the Games in 1924 in Paris.
