Question: Why is my alpaca coughing?

A breathing-impaired alpaca might have lungworms, a serious and potentially deadly infection in their respiratory system. They should not have a dry cough. Many of these symptoms could be a result of pneumonia which alpacas are highly susceptible to. Abnormalities should be immediately reported to your veterinarian.

How do you treat pneumonia in alpacas?

D. Nuflor (Florfenicol) – commonly used to treat upper respiratory infection, pneumonia, and tooth root infections in camelids. It is a broad spectrum antibiotic that is labeled to treat respiratory infections in cattle and is given every other day (EOD).

Can alpacas get TB?

TB is not a major health problem of South American camelids (llamas, alpacas, vicuñas, guanacos) worldwide but these species do occasionally become infected and develop clinical TB.

How do you check an alpacas health?

By palpating the area with your fingers and thumb you can make an appraisal of the muscle mass. It should reveal a firm, flat/slightly convex body shape. Bulging indicates fat coverage consistent with the animal being overweight, whilst a concave shape indicates that the animal is underweight condition.

Why is my alpaca not eating?

If theyre reluctant to eat, they might have a problem with one or more of their teeth that needs to be managed (especially in male alpacas, which have sharp canines which grow until theyre around 8 years old).

Are alpacas routinely tested for TB?
